Architect Plans General renovation in Finland

In many cases, damages trigger renovation. This renovation is an example for the other case, when there are no acute damages but equity coservation is the aim of the renovation.

Here, the owner hired an architect for comprehensive renovation planning. Those working on-site nevertheless bear great responsibility regarding the quality of renovation: Oftentimes, situations arise while works are being carried out which could not have been anticipated and, thus, were not planned for by the architects.

Building from the 70-ies
The building is located on the site of the general hospital in Tampere. Owners are the real estate company Kissantassu and University Hospital, Tampere.

The building was erected in 1963. The architectural office Antti Ylinen worked out the draft plan and the engineering office Käkoenen did the planning.

Supporting elements on the gable-ends were set-up in concrete. The long sides of the building are made of concrete sandwichpanels, covered with light roughcast (250 mm). Mineral wool was chosen for thermal insulation. The building has 3,516 m2 floor-space and is connected to district heat.

Trigger for renovation
There were no acute building damages but the age of the building warranted a general and thorough renovation. Facade and installation were to be renewed to state-of-the-art standard.
